Enjoying ourselves

While the couscous-vandal-wannabees are howling "you've not seen the last of us!," it turns out that Trader Joe's has not seen the last of Israeli supporters either. Apparently Hillel's Angels, a group of Jewish Harley riders are planning to take a motorcycle caravan through New Jersey this weekend to continue our support for Trader Joe's and Israeli products. Now that's political activism written FUN!

And speaking of fun, I don't know how many of you saw what happened the last time the "we don't really like Israel all that much" crowd attempted a food-related boycott (in this case, a picketing of sellers of kosher wins in Toronto). Note the sheepish disbursal of the boycotters when confronted with hundreds of people with joy in their hearts, and wine in their hands.

Hey BDS crew! There's a liquor store right down the street from me that not only sells Israeli and other kosher wines, but is Jewish owned! So let me know if you plan to capitalize on your "triumph" in Toronto so I can clear out some space in my wine cellar!

    I am so tired of being a model minority.

    Oh no! An invocation of the suffering of children! I as a parent and a human being am rendered helpless before such painful, evocative images.

    But wait a minute! Would my anonymous commenter feel the same amount of guilt he or she is hoping I will demonstrate if I were to provide equally compelling stories and images of that political entity dedicated tooth and claw to child abuse, the Palestinian Authority? Would images of children used as human bombs or shields make him or her waver in their devotion to their chosen cause? Or would they simply turn their head with a scoffing laugh at the mere mention of a situation which might require seeing moral complexity in the bitter Middle East conflict?

    I've come to believe that the BDS crowd is pretty much a one-trick pony: throwing images of suffering people in the faces of those of us who actually care about casualties of the conflict - on both sides - knowing full well that any attempt to turn the tables will be futile since their concern for the Palestinians is only feigned, just a useful ploy (nothing more nothing less).

    In short... Nice try. And no problem exercising your right to choose where to shop. Just don't interfere with the same rights being exercised by others choosing to buy Israeli products at Trader Joes or anywhere else.
